Folklorists Amy Skillman and Laura Marcus Green will be visiting Bowling Green on September 26-29, to consult with local groups and lead a community workshop. Skillman and Marcus, co-directors of "Building Cultural Bridges,” will meet with local immigrant/refugee groups and organizations that are involved with immigrants/refugees, as well as the arts and cultural communities more broadly, about resources and network building. On Friday, September 28, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., they will lead a workshop at the ALIVE Center for Community Partnerships (1818 31W bypass). The workshop will explore strategies and examples of programs that have successfully merged the arts with social services in order to enhance the integration of immigrants/refugees. It will be of interest to new immigrant/refugee service providers, artists, community organizations, folklorists, arts administrators, funders, schools/educators, public libraries, museums, shops and galleries that market immigrant/refugee arts, and those who are concerned with the well-being of immigrant/refugee communities.

Skillman and Marcus are recognized national leaders on issues of immigrant/refugee culture and arts, and have led many such workshops around the country. Their visit is supported by funding from the ALIVE Center for Community Partnerships and the Department of Folk Studies & Anthropology at Western Kentucky University, the Bramham/Collins Fund for Public Folklore, and the American Folklore Society. For more information, contact Nadia De Leon at the ALIVE Center (270-782-0082), or Tim Evans at the Folk Studies Program (270-745-5897).

Although the workshop is free, participants are asked to register by September 24, 2012, at
