New Business
There was a motion that we did not discuss fully or take a vote
on regarding the increase of dues. Recently Tim Lloyd sent a reminder
to us all for annual dues for AFS which included section dues. As
it now stands, we each pay $7 for the section dues. It appears to
be too late to make a decision on the dues for 2005-6 since Tim
has sent out the notices. I am not certain how to remedy the "pending
motion" and be in accordance with Robert's Rules of Order.
If anyone who was at the meeting has a suggestion you may email
me at cbspellma@yahoo.com
and I will see if we need to either
1) table it until next year, or
2) vote on whether to increase this year's dues to the proposed
$10.
At this point the motion is inactive.
Correction to the 2004 minutes
Those in attendance at the October 2005 meeting received a copy
of last year's 2004 minutes and there was a correction made by Ruth
Olson to the commendation for the 2004 Dorothy Howard Award to the
Hmong Cultural Tour. It now reads " This year's recipient was
announced by Jan Rosenberg. The award of $100 was received by Ruth
Olson for the Hmong Cultural Tour, a collaborative project by Mark
Wagler (Randall School), John Robinson and Cher Peng Her (Madison
Children's Museum), and Anne Pryor (Wisconsin Arts Board)."
Financial update
Luc D. Guglielmi at Kennesaw State University opened discussion
regarding the possibility of sponsors for the Dorothy Howard Award
(now funded primarily by our coffers) and for the Robinson-Roeder-Ward
Fellow (funded,in part, from the Public Sector Auction money raised
by items auctioned for the Ed Section).
After the section meeting, Tim Lloyd stated the following regarding
outside contributions:
" Since AFS sections are not independent organizations, we
have two simple rules about sections making requests for outside
support:
1. Please keep me informed about who you're informally approaching
(and for what purpose, and for how much money) before you
make your approaches.
2. When it comes time to do an official letter of request, that
letter should come from me."
Sue Eleuterio provided a ball park figure of the amount raised this
year (2005) at the Public Programs auction for the Ed Section. Alysia's
report will cite this specific amount; however, we have an additional
$50 to add to the amount which was collected the day after our Ed
Section meeting for additional auction items sold.
The ever-increasing cost of food for the Saturday morning workshop
was discussed. The 2004 workshop in Salt Lake City exceeded the
usual $300 allocated for food. As we all know, hotels charge a hefty
amount for that bagel we chew on. Following is the itemized bill
from the Salt Lake hotel, courtesy of Tim Lloyd:
"Here is the itemization of charges from the Little America
Hotel for the FL&Ed workshop food and beverages at the Salt
Lake City AFS annual meeting in October 2004.
"You had ordered 2 gallons of coffee, 2 gallons of decaf, 2
gallons of hot water + assorted teas, 2 gallons of fruit punch,
2 gallons of lemonade, 1 dozen blueberry muffins, and 1 dozen bagels
with cream cheese.
"The cost was:
Coffee (2 gallons @ $35): 70
Decaf (2 gallons @ $35): 70
Teas (2 gallons @ $35): 70
Fruit punch (2 gallons @ $30): 60
Lemonade (2 gallons @ $30): 60
Blueberry muffins (1 doz @ $25): 25
Bagels/cream cheese (1 doz @ $30): 30
Subtotal 1: 385
20% service charge: 77
Subtotal 2: 462
7.6% tax: 35.11
Total: 497.11"
In the future, senior and junior conveners will need to inquire
about surcharges and taxes which can easily increase the bill by
an additional $100. There will be a $60 reimbursement for the subtotaled
food amount which configures the cost of food now to be $325, plus
those dreaded surcharges and tax.
Listserv
Tim Lloyd forwarded 118 names to me which represent those who are
currently members of the AFS Folklore and Ed section.
Awards and Recipients
Winners of the 2005 Dorothy Howard Award were announced at the section
meeting, and the 2005 Robinson-Roeder-Ward Fellow, Renee Morris,
was introduced. [Editor's note: See the front page of the newsletter
for more information about this year's winners.]
Elections
The final action of the section meeting was to solicit volunteers
for next year's prize committees, and to elect a new junior convener.
Sean Galvin was elected to be junior convener, as Alysia McLain
moves into the role of Senior Convener.
