The Folklore and Education
Section is continuing to receive announcements of new instructional resources
for teaching about folklore. Please send news of completed projects and
projects in development to Gregory Hansen at GHansen@mail.dos.state.fl.us. Paddy Bowman announces
the new publication Masters of Traditional Arts: Education Guide.
This resource focuses on the NEA’s Heritage Fellowship Award winners
and how their artistry can be used to teach about folklife. It includes
background information on the traditional artists and musicians honored
by the award program as well as lesson plans and activities for classroom
instruction for all grade levels. This DVD-ROM and paperback is published
by ABC-CLIO
in Santa Barbara and is available for $49 (ISBN 1-57607-962-7). Paddy,
Betty Carter, and Alan Govenar are completing a new education guide that
accompanies a DVD-Rom, Masters of Traditional Arts that incorporates video,
audio, photographs, and text on the 259 NEA National Heritage Fellows
assembled from various archives and folklorists' files. Kristin Congdon of
the University of Central Florida has published a compilation of traditional
stories from Florida using archival sources and recent field recordings.
Uncle Monday and Other Florida Tales is published by the University
Press of Mississippi. The book includes an introductory essay on storytelling
in Florida, illustrations by Kitty Kitson Petterson, and suggested educational
activities to accompany each story. Karen Ellis, founder of the Educational CyberPlayGround writes that she has authored DOMINO, a book and cassette of traditional children’s songs, games and field recordings from the American Virgin Islands. The written text represents the melodic and rhythmic transcription of the music, and includes rhythmic notation and pictures illustrating the described actions. Accompanying the written text is an authentic 35 minute original live sound field recording of the native children ages 4 through twelve. The resource includes a "How To" book and cassette, containing step by step instructions on how to play along with each song, chant, and game. Nancy Solomon of Long Island Traditions sent a copy of Jocelyn Hazelwood Donlon’s new publication Teachers’ Resource Guide: American Holiday Celebrations. This extensive publication includes background information on holiday celebrations and traditions in a range of American communities, and it includes various activities and reference materials for use in the classroom. Nancy included a copy of a student magazine entitled Maritime Cultural Traditions of Long Island. The publication is the work of elementary students from a folklife in education project, and it provides information on commercial fishing and maritime folklife in the Long Island region.
