AFSNews Careers Column August 1994 |
Careers
Sometimes you really have to dig to find job opportunities. Now you can burrow--through cyberspace, no less.
In her Bytelore column in the June 1994 issue of the AFS Newsletter, Stephanie Hall wrote about using the gopher utility to gain access to folklore and folklife resources on the Internet. The Internet also features many resources useful to job searchers.
The LC Marvel gopher server at the Library of Congress that Hall helped set up includes "Folkline," a list of current job and funding opportunities in folklore, as well as meeting notices. To explore this service, gopher to marvel.loc.gov. (Using the gopher will vary from system to system. On a VAX system running VMS software, at the $ prompt, one would type gopher marvel.loc.gov.) Select Global Electronic Library from the menu, then choose either The Arts or Social Sciences. Next choose Folklore, Folklife, and Ethnomusicology, and then Folkline Weekly Information Service.
Another valuable resource is the weekly list of vacancies from the Chronicle of Higher Education. You can access this list by gophering to chronicle.merit.edu or to msen.com. The latter address also features the Online Career Center. The OCC includes a database of current job vacancies, opportunities at various colleges and universities around the country, and a resume bulletin board. You can post your resume there free. Follow the instructions on the gopher menus.
For all current federal job vacancies around the world, gopher to dartmouth.edu. Select Career Services from the menu, and then choose Job Openings in the Federal Government. (Some categories may be difficult to access. As with all other aspects of the job search, you must be persistent.)
Many colleges and universities post job vacancies on their gopher servers. Often they post only campus positions, but some include off-campus openings as well. One especially useful database is the University of Missouri's Job HUNTER, an electronic version of a biweekly newspaper containing employment vacancies for college graduates in all categories from across the United States, especially the Midwest. Gopher to gopher.missouri.edu and choose the following menus: Campus Information and Gopher Servers; Gopher: Gopher Services around UMC; University of Missouri INFORMU (Experimental); Administrative Information & Job Opportunities; and The Job HUNTER.
