AFS Committees

 

1. Standing Committees

 

Cultural Diversity Committee

Purpose: To undertake research and other activities regarding priorities and strategies to diversify the Society's membership and to keep the Society engaged with diverse communities, and, based on those activities, to recommend policies and actions to the Executive Board.

Chairs: Rachel Gonzalez-Martin and Suzy Seriff

Members: Norma Cantú, Sojin Kim, Edward Millar, Shirley Moody-Turner, Aaron Oforlea, Kay Turner, Anika Wilson, Nancy Yan

 

International Issues Committee 

Purpose: To undertake research and other activities regarding priorities and strategies to keep the Society engaged with folklorists and folklore organizations worldwide and, based on those activities, to recommend policies and actions to the Executive Board.

Chair: Lisa Gilman

Members: Valdimar Hafstein and Leah Lowthorp 

 

Membership Committee

Purpose: To undertake research and other activities regarding the growth and development of the Society’s membership and of the services the Society provides to its members, and, based on those activities, to recommend policies and actions to the Executive Board.

Members: We are now reconstituting this committee.

 

Mentoring Committee 

Purpose: To undertake research and other activities regarding priorities and strategies to serve the mentoring and professional development needs of Society members, and, based on those activities, to recommend policies and actions to the Executive Board.

Chairs: Lisa Gilman and Guillermo De Los Reyes

Members: Wanda Addison, Barry Bergey, Nancy Groce, Amy Kitchener, Solimar Otero

 

Nominating Committee 

Purpose: To make nominations for elected offices, and suggestions to the Executive Board for appointed positions.

Chair: Joseph Sciorra

Members: Olivia Cadaval, Diane E. Goldstein, Steve Zeitlin 

 

Publications Committee

Purpose: To recruit and recommend to the Executive Board the appointment of Society editors and to monitor the state of all Society publications in all media and suggest publication-related policies or actions to the Executive Board.

Members: We are now reconstituting this committee.


2. Ad Hoc Committees

 

Development Committee

Purpose: To provide counsel to the staff and Executive Board on fundraising and donor development strategies and activities.

Chair: Diane E. Goldstein

Members: C. Kurt Dewhurst, Bill Ivey, Wolfgang Mieder, Maida Owens, Patricia A. Turner, Rosemary Lévy Zumwalt

 

Committee on Contingent Workforce Concerns

Purpose
: To make recommendations to the Board for policies and actions to support adjunct, freelance, independent, and alt-ac members of the Society.

Chair: Martha Sims
