At its April 13-14, 2012 meeting in Columbus, Ohio, the AFS Executive Board:
Approved the minutes of the Board’s October 12, 2011, meeting in Bloomington, Indiana
Accepted the auditor’s report on the Society's fiscal year 2011 finances, which showed a continued record of AFS financial stability and accurate record-keeping
Approved the review committee’s recommendation for the 2012 recipient of the AFS Lifetime Scholarly Achievement Award, and a further recommendation from the committee that this award be made every year rather than every other year
Approved a proposal for the creation of a new AFS ad hoc Committee on Teaching
Reviewed the Executive Director’s performance for the 2011-2012 year, and set goals for his 2012-2013 performance (both done in executive session)
Approved the Executive Director’s proposal for the Society’s budget for FY 2013 (September 1, 2012, to August 31, 2013)
Reviewed an initial report on the quantitative and qualitative responses to the 2011 AFS member survey
Adopted the outline of a process to guide the Board’s long-range planning work in 2013
Approved a proposal to begin planning an AFS mentoring program
Considered several additional items of old business carried forward from previous Board meetings
Received items of new business for future Board consideration
The Board will hold its next meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, on the morning of Wednesday, October 24, followed by an afternoon meeting with the heads and directors of academic and public folklore programs, as well as representatives from the AFS Graduate Student Section and Independent Folklorists’ Section.
The members of the Executive Board for 2012 are: Diane Goldstein, President; Kurt Dewhurst, Past President; and Ray Cashman, Lisa Gabbert, Jason Baird Jackson, David Todd Lawrence, Sabina Magliocco, Solimar Otero, Leonard Norman Primiano, Ricki Saltzman, Marilyn White, and Juwen Zhang.
