AFS is still accepting applications from currently enrolled students who want to participate in a mentorship/shadowing program during the 2013 annual meeting. The program will pair students with established scholars based on similarities in interest, facilitating intellectual exchanges with the hope that these will lead toward future mentoring relationships. Students and their mentors will spend approximately half a day together at some point during the meeting, during which time each pair can discuss the student’s goals and interests, and the mentor can offer personalized advice for navigating the field. Activities during this time will be at the mentor’s discretion, but they may include attending sessions together, meeting for a meal, or introducing the student to some of the mentor’s colleagues. Students are encouraged, though not required, to maintain contact with their mentor after the meeting.

The program is open to all students who are members of AFS and who are attending the 2013 annual meeting. There will be a maximum of 20 student participants. If accepted, students must commit to preparing for the shadowing by doing research on their assigned mentor and on potential topics of discussion. To apply, students should write a one-page letter outlining their broad professional goals, research interests, and desired outcomes of the shadowing experience. Students may request a potential mentor in their letter of application; however, mentors will be chosen based on availability and at the discretion of the mentorship committee. Students should send the letter of application, along with a current CV, to Lisa Gabbert at lisa.gabbert@usu.edu.

Applications are due September 10, 2013.
