I'm still reeling from this news. Like many others, I will remember John Miles Foley as a remarkable scholar, an engaging professor, and a kind and generous man.

An inspired scholar, wonderful teacher, and generous friend. He was so very proud of the accomplishments his students made to the study of verbal art in all its forms. HIs own work and his enthusiasm for our discipline will continue to inspire us all.

This is a sad loss for the international community of epic scholars. John was here on the campus of the University of Vermont just a few moths ago. Of course, he presented a superb lecture, and we had a wonderful dinner afterwards. His scholarship was acknoweldged throughout the world, and he made an invaluable contribution to epic studies. His work will live on as we carry him as our firend in our minds and hearts for the rest of our lives. Wolfgang Mieder

I am stupefied. John was a great, great scholar, but more important to me was his everlasting good humor, cheerfulness, and most of all generosity. I am very sorry for the loss to his family.

This is a great loss. I knew Foley only as a scholar of oral formulaic theory and orality and he was the finest. Many condolences to his family and colleagues.

This is tragic. I met John at the Folklore Fellows 2007 summer school, riding around on an old Russian bus through Karelia, so we got to know the professors quite well. He was really supportive and open with all of the students, and I really admired his work. What a great loss for Folklore.
