An inspired scholar, wonderful teacher, and generous friend. He was so very proud of the accomplishments his students made to the study of verbal art in all its forms. HIs own work and his enthusiasm for our discipline will continue to inspire us all.
I'm so sorry to hear this! In addition to being a wonderful scholar, John was a wonderful person. This is a great loss to the scholarly community and to everyone lucky enough to have known him.
This is a sad loss for the international community of epic scholars. John was here on the campus of the University of Vermont just a few moths ago. Of course, he presented a superb lecture, and we had a wonderful dinner afterwards. His scholarship was acknoweldged throughout the world, and he made an invaluable contribution to epic studies. His work will live on as we carry him as our firend in our minds and hearts for the rest of our lives.
This is tragic. I met John at the Folklore Fellows 2007 summer school, riding around on an old Russian bus through Karelia, so we got to know the professors quite well. He was really supportive and open with all of the students, and I really admired his work. What a great loss for Folklore.
