The Society is instituting a new procedure for recognizing and
remembering our colleagues who have passed away in the previous year.
This new procedure will ensure that our colleagues' passing will be
appropriately recognized in several ways, while also ensuring that
adequate time will remain for the other business of the Society that
needs to be discussed or transacted at the annual business meeting.
Remembrances will no longer be delivered from the floor during the
annual business meeting each October. Members who want a colleague's
passing to be recognized at that meeting should send that colleague's
name by e-mail to the AFS Executive Director
no later than October 1. The President of the Society, or her/his
designee from the Executive Board, will read these names at the business
meeting and will ask for a collective moment of silence to recognize
these colleagues and mark their passing.
Members who want to prepare informal remembrances for the AFS web site may send them at any time to the AFS Review Editor
for online publication. Members will also be able to add their
comments and responses to those remembrances online. The editors of the
Journal of American Folklore will at their discretion solicit full obituaries for publication.
