Folklorist Kathryn Morgan, emerita of Swarthmore College, passed away on November 28, 2010, at age 91. Her pioneering work in African American folklore and family folklore opened many doors; she was an important influence on the emerging African American storytelling movement. I believe that she was the first African American woman to get a PhD in folklore from the University of Pennsylvania. Professor of History at Swarthmore for more than 40 years, she was a great mentor to many, and a fighter: she did not suffer fools or back down. More biographical information is at http://www.folkloreproject.org/folkarts/resources/pubs/morgan.php.

Her viewing will be Friday, December 3, from 7:00-9:00 PM at the Donohue Funeral Home, 8401 West Chester Pike (at the corner of Lynn Blvd.), Upper Darby PA; 610/449-0300. More information about famiiy and contributions is at http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/delcotimes/obituary.aspx?n=kathryn-l-morgan&pid=146866566.

We invite remembrances of Kathryn Morgan for the AFS Review; please submit them by adding a comment to this posting.
