The Department of English and Philosophy at Arkansas State University opens a call for papers and presentations for the eighteenth annual Delta Symposium on 18-21 April 2012. Individual presentations on any topic are welcome, but special consideration will be provided to papers and organized panels that specifically address this year’s theme: "Roots and Generations." Symposium participants addressing this theme will explore continuity and changes that connect generations across time. Organizers are particularly interested in papers and presentations that focus on local history, vernacular culture, roots music, and their connections to life in the Arkansas and Mississippi Deltas. The symposium hosts scholars and students of the humanities and social sciences, and features multidisciplinary presentations on topics ranging from blues, country and other forms of music associated with the Delta to historical and contemporary issues relevant to the region. The event offers a variety of presentations, including panels, concerts, keynote speakers, readings/signings by prominent writers, and an afternoon festival of roots music.

For further information, contact the Delta Symposium Committee or visit the Symposium website: http://altweb.astate.edu/blues/. Deadline for entries is December 1, 2011.

Each entry should consist of the following:

  • Presenter’s name and affiliation
  • Contact information, including Street Address, Telephone, and Email
  • Vita (2 pages)
  • 200-word abstract of the presentation
  • Technical needs for the presentation
