The theme for the next Modern Language Association (MLA) Convention (Chicago, January 3–6, 2019) focuses on textual transactions as "mutually constitutive engagements of human beings, texts, and contexts." This speaks to the exact center of folklore studies and brings with it an opportunity for folklorists interested in performance to reflect upon the role not only of how those performances play out in their respective communities but also how the idea of performance, especially in its dependence upon representation of lived experience, enables transactions across disciplinary and institutional boundaries.

Because this will be an MLA Convention session sponsored by the American Folklore Society, organizers are especially interested in proposals from AFS members.

If you are interested in taking part in the session, please send a 300-word abstract and a brief CV to Jim Deutsch,, by March 18, 2018.
