The Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) houses the oldest ongoing collection of Native art in the Western Hemisphere. Beyond stewarding the collection through exhibitions and publications, PEM furthers its commitment to it by fostering and advancing the next generation of Native American leaders in the cultural sector through the Native American Fellowship (NAF) program.

The NAF program emerged more than a decade ago as part of an Education through Cultural and Historical Organizations grant to fulfill the need of embracing more museum and cultural heritage professionals of Native American descent. In 2015, the American Alliance of Museums recognized the impact of PEM’s Native American Fellowship program with their EdCom Excellence in Programming Award.

NAF programming redefines the Fellowship experience. While at PEM, Fellows develop the knowledge, skills, and networks necessary to become 21st-century visionaries who shape their communities, museums, and nonprofit cultural institutions.

The Native American Fellowship recognizes the need for indigenous voices to be heard across the cultural heritage sector. NAF opportunities provide the space and programming for these conversations to occur and produce results. The program selects Fellows interested in collaborating to amplify their voices.

For the year 2018 PEM is offering a Summer Fellowship and a Long-term Fellowship.
