LOC Seeks Summer Intern (Paid)

The Library of Congress (LOC) is seeking a qualified master or doctoral student for its summer 2018 Cultural Sustainability Internship.

The Internship will provide the successful applicant the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills involving the long-term preservation and accessibility of AFC’s digital collections. The Internship offers hands-on experience with and exposure to 21st-century preservation issues facing cultural heritage institutions with a mission to sustain long-term, durable access to their collections.

The Intern will work closely with a mentor throughout the duration of the appointment, and will have the opportunity to collaborate with AFC staff on current projects and planning for new initiatives. The Intern will have a direct impact on AFC policies and procedures for processing legacy and newly collected digital content. At the completion of the appointment, the Intern will prepare and present recommendations to advance the sustainability of the AFC’s repository and its contents.

The Intern will receive a stipend as support for living and other expenses during this appointment. Stipend rates are determined by Library of Congress officials and are based on the selected candidate’s academic and professional background. The selected candidate will also be eligible to receive a transit subsidy allowance.

 

Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled and have completed at least one semester to one year of study in a degree-granting master or doctoral program from a department or school at post-secondary academic institution accredited by accrediting institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Graduate degrees with program or area concentrations listed below are well aligned with the internship:
    • Communication - Mass Communication and Media Studies
    • Computer Engineering, Computer Programming or Computer Science
    • Information Science
    • Library Science
    • Management Information Systems and Services
    • Materials Science
    • Museum Studies
  • Must be available to work onsite in Washington, D.C. for the entire project period from June 4, 2018 to August 10, 2018.
  • Must be U.S. Citizen.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Applicants must be U.S. citizens who are currently enrolled in a degree-granting program of study at an accredited institution of higher learning at the graduate level (college, university, or tribal college). Appointment/retention is subject to a favorable evaluation of a personnel security/suitability investigation.
