AFS Sponsors Events at 2018 MLA Convention

The American Folklore Society is sponsoring three events at the Modern Language Association’s Annual Convention, taking place January 4–7, 2018, in New York City.

  • Three papers on “Destabilizing Folklore: Cultural Production in Moments of Insecurity”:
    • “‘The Rebellious Underground’: Lomax, Henderson, Lloyd, and the Conception of the Radical Folklorist in the Mid–Twentieth Century,” Corey Gibson (University of Groningen)
    • “Folk the Police: Blues Song Response to Law Enforcement in the Black Community during the Era of Jim Crow,” Mark Allan Jackson (Middle Tennessee State University)
    • “From Fox to Goldilocks: The Reformations of a Folktale,” Shuli Barzilai (Hebrew University of Jerusalem)
    Thursday, January 4, from 5:15–6:30pm in the Union Square Room of the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel, 811 Seventh Avenue (between 52nd and 53rd Streets).
  • A roundtable discussion of “Folklore Careers beyond and within Academia,” with:
    • Robert Baron (New York State Council on the Arts)
    • James Deutsch (Smithsonian Institution)
    • Mira Johnson (Pelham Arts Center)
    • Maria Kennedy (ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes)
    • Ellen McHale (New York Folklore Society)
    • Kay Turner (American Folklore Society)
    Friday, January 5, from 1:45–3pm in the Hudson Room of the New York Hilton Midtown Hotel, 1335 Sixth Avenue (between 53rd and 54th Streets).
  • A cash bar/reception open to all, from 7:15–8:30pm on Friday, January 5, in the New York Ballroom East of the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel, 811 Seventh Avenue (between 52nd and 53rd Streets).
