Tourism is a fast-growing activity worldwide encompassing diverse types of activities, territories, communities and visitors (UNWTO, 2015). The creative dynamics of tourism destinations is crucial to feed the tourism offer that increasingly needs to be different and to valorize the local communities’ culture (Cruz, Costa, & Marques, 2016). Creative tourism has been defined as the visitors’ opportunity to develop their creative potential through active participation in courses and learning experiences, which are characteristic of the destination they are visiting (Richards & Raymond, 2000).  Many small cities and rural areas hold a very rich collective memory on cultural traditions and local crafting. Thus, territorial scale may be an important factor to consider in the connection of the tourist with the destination and, at the same time, an important enabler of development in small cities and rural areas (Duxbury, 2016; Duxbury & Campbell, 2011). Tourism impacts are largely positive, particularly in terms of economic benefits and resources attraction, but it is becoming relevant to pay more attention to social impacts of tourism, especially when they affect negatively communities that are more susceptible to dramatic changes in their routines and practices with tourism development such as rural communities (Cohen, 1984).  While creative dynamics is commonly associated with urban growth and variety generated with critical mass (Costa, 2008; Jacobs, 1961; Markusen, 2006) there is room to accept that small cities and even rural territories may have a role in the global networks (Grant, 2014). These creative dynamics can be crucial to retain people in the territory, and even ignite the development of other economic activities, such as tourism (Cruz, 2014). 

This thematic dossier of CIDADES, Comunidades e Territórios aims to look over to the new grounds of creative tourism theory and practice, and simultaneously to contribute to the reflection on the economic and community benefits of developing and implementing creative tourism projects in small cities and rural areas. Thus, it welcomes paper proposals that reflect on:

  • New trends in creative tourism research
  • Qualitative and quantitative methodologies applied to the creative tourism research
  • New theoretical approaches to the concept of creative tourism
  • The different bases for creative tourism (arts, crafts, tradition, senses, community, …) to shape a classification
  • Specificities of the creative tourism offer and demand
  • Sustainability and implementation models of creative tourism initiatives
  • Creative tourism in different spatial atmospheres: differences, challenges, advantages, limitations, and beneficiaries
  • Creative tourism, territory, and community: connections and disconnections
  • Economic, social, environmental, and cultural impacts of creative tourism

CIDADES is an open access academic journal disseminating research and discussions in the scientific area of Urban Studies. CIDADES is multilingual and welcome contributions in Portuguese, English, French and Spanish.

Any submission of articles is made directly through the website platform and is subjected to double-bind peer reviewing process.  Deadline to submit paper proposals: October 31, 2017; Word count: up to 9000 words (including diagrams, tables, notes and references).
