Dear Friends,

I’m writing to invite you—those who indicated on their conference registration forms that this was their first time to participate in an American Folklore Society (AFS) annual meeting—to an informal welcome reception hosted by the members of the AFS Executive Board.

The event will take place in the Orchid Room of the Hyatt Regency Miami from 6:30 to 7:30 pm on Wednesday evening, October 19, immediately after the opening ceremonies for the AFS/ISFNR meeting conclude. A cash bar will be available.

The main opening reception, on the Riverwalk/Promenade, will continue until 8:30 pm, so you are welcome to move to that event after ours ends. Students, the AFS Graduate Student Section is also sponsoring a welcome reception for you from 7:30 to 8:30 in the Monroe and Flagler Rooms. Clearly, there’s no shortage of social events that evening!

All of us on the Board, listed below, will be present at our event—you will know us by our name tags and ribbons. Please seek us out to introduce yourself, to ask us to introduce you to someone you want to meet but don’t know, or to ask questions about the meeting or about AFS. I encourage you to visit this page of the AFS website ( for “How to Make the AFS Meeting Work Best for You,” a useful document written by former AFS Board member Carole Carpenter.

Paper and other presentation sessions at the meeting will begin earlier that same day, at 12:00 noon. The meeting registration desk, where you can pick up your program book, name tag and other materials, will open in the Promenade at 11:00 am.

I hope you will be able to join us on Wednesday evening, October 19. If you have any questions about the meeting before you leave home, please contact AFS Executive Director Tim Lloyd at

Safe travels!

Dr. Kay Turner, President
