AFS is happy to announce the appointment of Paulina Guerrero to its Membership Director position.
Ms. Guerrero, a native of Maryland, earned an MA in folklore from George Mason University and is presently ABD in folklore at Indiana University. She has served as a graduate assistant in IU's Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology, has experience in folk festival and event production for the Maryland Traditions program and the Smithsonian's Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, and has spent more than a decade in administrative, management, and programming positions at several non-profit social service and cultural organizations.
In her new position at AFS, she will take a leading role in managing AFS's relations with its members and in building and strengthening Society membership. In this latter task she will work collaboratively with our Executive Board, Membership Committee, and Sections, and with folklore centers in the academy, in government, and in the non-profit world. She will also take on important roles in AFS's day-to-day financial activities, annual meeting, and communications.
"We're very pleased to add a folklorist of Paulina's caliber and experience to the AFS team," said Executive Director Tim Lloyd. Associate Director Lorraine Cashman added, "Her skills complement those of the rest of the staff, and she will help us create a more capable and active Society." Guerrero will begin work for AFS on August 10.
