The Society for Ethnomusicology, Southeast and Caribbean Chapter (SEMSEC), is pleased to announce the call for proposals for its 2015 annual meeting, to be held at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, on Friday and Saturday, March 13 and 14, 2015.

Keynote Address: "Deep Rivers, Vigilant Mountains: Sonic Geographies of War in the Andes." Jonathan Ritter, University of California, Riverside

The Program Committee welcomes proposals from scholars working in a wide range of fields including musicology, music education, music theory, dance, art history, political science, anthropology, sociology, area studies, media studies, folklore, performance studies, and popular culture. Proposals from graduate and undergraduate students are particularly encouraged.

We welcome proposals on any and all music related topics. We especially encourage proposals linked to the general theme "Peaks and Valleys," which addresses both cultural and physical aspects of music making. This theme evokes a regional atmosphere that includes research topics that focus on Appalachia as well as other "mountain"-based projects (e.g. Andes, Himalayas, etc.). The theme also alludes to the visual representation of sound on an oscilloscope—the peaks and valleys of amplitude and frequency. With this in mind, we wish to encourage creative interpretations on the discourses and methodologies of sound studies and technologies. These may include (but are not limited to) alternative economies and conceptualizations of sound production, sound and environmental sustainability, and non-Western ideas about the physical nature of sound and its effects.

Submissions may include individual scholarly papers (20-minute presentation, 10-minute discussion); organized panels of 3 or 4 papers, or 3 papers and a discussant; forum/roundtable-format discussions linked to conference themes; other creative presentations and workshops involving performance, scholarship, and discussion.

Each member of an organized panel must submit an individual paper proposal (see submission guidelines below for individual scholarly papers) and the panel chair/organizer must submit a panel abstract (panel abstract must not exceed 150 words). Organizers of forum/roundtables should submit an abstract of 150 words or less detailing the central theme, purpose, and scope of the forum, with a preliminary list of participants. The suggested forum format is 90-minutes, with four to six panelists including a discussant; other options will be considered.

For individual scholarly papers, please submit an abstract of 250 words or less in a format suitable for direct publication in the abstract booklet. Abstracts should clearly indicate a central argument, research methodology, and conclusions. Include title, centered at the top of the page and, at the bottom right, author's name, institutional affiliation or place of residence.

Please include the following with all proposals:

  • Name
  • Presentation title
  • Institutional affiliation
  • Mailing address
  • Email address
  • Phone number

Email all proposals by 5:00 p.m. EST on December 15 to Elizabeth Clendinning, program chair (clendiea@wfu.edu).
