|Past Annual Meetings|
The American Folklore Society has been holding meetings since 1889, one year after the Society's founding. We have met every year except for 1942 and 1943, in the midst of World War II, when many activities of all kinds were curtailed.
As part of the Open Folklore
effort, AFS is working with the Indiana University-Bloomington
Library toward the goal of
assembling a complete set of programs from past annual meetings, which
as a group contain a remarkable on-the-ground history of the field, its
people, and their ideas. PDFs of AFS annual meeting program books from 1949 to 1974 and from 2004-2010, and of reports on AFS annual meetings from 1889 to 1948 that appeared in the JAF, are all available through the Indiana University institutional repository, and their contents can be searched through Open Folklore search. (We are now working on completing this set by adding AFS meeting programs from 1975 through 2003.) The general URL for AFS materials in the repository is https://scholarworks.iu.edu/dspace/handle/2022/9004.
