The Field of Folklore Studies and the American Folklore Society

Prompted by recommendations from the AFS media and public relations committee and recent member comments, AFS has created an informational piece for students about the field of folklore studies, the Society, and the opportunities the Society provides to students. It is available for you to download in PDF format here. We ask those who can to distribute it to students. It will exist only in electronic form, so you can easily distribute it to entire classes through listservs or through your course management system. It is up to you to decide whether you give it out to everyone in every section of Folklore 101, just to those whom you consider your more promising students, or to some other selected group. Those of you who work outside the academy can just as easily distribute it to promising interns, younger staff at your public-sector program or organization, community scholars, or anyone else who exhibits an interest. Please share this PDF with your students and younger colleagues. They need to know that there is a field of folklore studies that could be a professional home for them as it is for you, and a Society that stands behind folklorists and their work. We are depending on you to help us get the word out.
