2016 AFS/ISFNR Joint Annual Meeting
The Society's 2016 annual meeting will be a joint meeting with the International Society for Folk Narrative Research, October 19-22, at the Hyatt Regency Miami, in Miami, Florida. The theme for the meeting, on which presentations are encouraged but not required, is "Unfinished Stories: Folklife and Folk Narrative at the Gateway to the Future."

Program Updates

Adjustments to the program are inevitable; keep an eye on the Program Addendum for changes. The Addendum includes all changes since the program book was produced in July; changes since October 12 will be highlighted in red.

Program App

This year, we’re introducing a conference app that will allow you to access all meeting information, including the full schedule and abstracts, on a smartphone or tablet. The conference app includes all the information of the printed program book, with program updates through October 12, as well as the ability to build your own schedule and send messages or chat within the app.

See the App Guide for information about how to get and use the app.

Program Book

You can download a pdf of the Program Book for general information, a program summary, the full schedule, and abstracts; the book will be printed and distributed to registered attendees at the meeting.

Preregistration has closed. Registration will open again at the meeting on October 19.

Hotel and Travel Arrangements

See Local Information for a link to reserving a guest room at the conference hotel, links to information about getting to Miami, and visitors' guides, including the essential Local Guide prepared by the Local Planning Committee.

Advance Registration Required for Some Special Events

A number of events scheduled during the meeting require preregistration before September 15. For more information about these special events, see Tours, Workshops, and Other Ticketed Events.

Information for ISFNR Members

Please review this information about the logistics of registering and requesting a letter of invitation.

New Policy: Cancellations

Once a paper or session is submitted, it is expected that the presentation will take place at the conference if the proposal is accepted. Participation in the conference is competitive, and a cancelled presentation creates a hole in the program and eliminates a spot that could have accommodated another scholar. As a courtesy to AFS members, conference presenters, and attendees, AFS strongly discourages presenters from canceling their participation in the conference after proposals have been accepted. Those who find that they can't attend the meeting are encouraged not to cancel, but to find someone else to read their papers.

Starting in 2016, the refund policy is as follows:

  • Program participants (chairs, presenters, discussants, etc.) who withdraw a presentation may request a refund of meeting registration fees until August 31, but a $50 cancellation fee will be retained ($25 for students and low-income participants); after that, no refunds will be issued.
  • Registrants who are not named on the program may receive a full refund until August 31; after that, no refunds will be issued.
  • Additional penalties may be applied for presenters who withdraw a presentation after October 1.
