|2011 Annual Meeting: Bloomington, Indiana|
The American Folklore Society's 123rd annual meeting will be held at Biddle Hotel and Conference Center of the Indiana Memorial Union on the Indiana University campus in Bloomington, Indiana, on October 12-15, 2011.
Planning for the meeting has been carried out thus far by a coordinating group from Bloomington—Michael Evans, Michael Dylan Foster, Diane Goldstein, Jason Jackson, Jon Kay, John McDowell, Debra Raver, Chris Roush, Sheri Sherrill, and Pravina Shukla—who will be joined by many others as the year progresses.
Our main hotel, the Biddle Hotel and Conference Center, is located in the Indiana Memorial Union complex on the Indiana University campus in Bloomington. Most annual meeting sessions will take place there. Our secondary hotel, the Marriott Courtyard, is located seven blocks away (we will have shuttle service operating during the meeting). Between the two hotels sits Bloomington’s downtown, home to many interesting restaurants, shops, and bars.
Our hosts for this meeting will be the faculty, staff, and students of Indiana University’s Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology. They are planning a number of special events for us at locations around the campus. The Society for Ethnomusicology is headquartered on the Indiana campus, and will be lending a hand as well. Our meeting theme of "Peace, War, Folklore” is consonant with "Making War, Making Peace,” the IU College of Arts and Sciences' overarching educational theme for the Fall 2011 semester, and we expect that the larger campus and town community will participate in theme-oriented AFS events.
The Indianapolis International Airport (airport code IND) serves Bloomington. The following airports have non-stop service to Indianapolis: Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago Midway and O'Hare, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Memphis, Miami, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, New York La Guardia and JFK, Newark, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Raleigh/Durham, Salt Lake City, Tampa, Toronto, and Washington DC.
The Bloomington Shuttle service provides convenient and frequent transportation directly from the Indianapolis airport and the IU Memorial Union and the Marriott Courtyard—the trip takes about 90 minutes and costs $15 one way. You can make shuttle reservations online to ensure you have a seat at just the time you need it—they will lay on more vehicles according to advance reservations—and you likely will be traveling to and from Bloomington in a bus full of folklorists.
Bloomington is also within a day’s drive of folklore programs at Michigan State University, The Ohio State University, the University of Missouri, the University of North Carolina, the University of Wisconsin, and Western Kentucky University.
